Moving out or staying on?​

 

There's no need to rush into making a decision! Depending on what type of tenancy agreement you have, some accommodation providers may ask if you want to stay for the following year within the first few weeks of moving in, but do not feel pressured into this. 

 

Don’t forget there is a surplus of good quality student accommodation in Liverpool so there is no need to rush.

 

 

Renters' Rights Act changes and moving out

 

If you are living in a shared house or flat, your fixed-term tenancy agreement will have converted to a periodic tenancy agreement on 1 May 2026. This means your tenancy now runs month to month, with no fixed end date. To move out, you will need to give 2 full months' notice to quit to your accommodation provider. If you are living in a private hall, that is a member of the National Code, you are likely to have signed a common law tenancy with a fixed end date. You should move out on that date. Read more about this here.

 

If you are living in a private hall that is not a member of the National Code, your tenancy fixed-term agreement will have converted to a periodic tenancy. To move out you will need to give 2 full months' notice to quit to your accommodation provider. Read more about this here.

 

 

Moving out checklist

 

When the time comes to move out of your current accommodation, it doesn't have to be a stressful experience. There are often lots of things to remember to do before you leave, so check out our handy checklist and tips to improve your chances of getting your full deposit back.

 

Tenancy agreement

Check your contract for an end of tenancy procedure and follow it!

Cleaning

Have a proper deep clean! The property needs to be returned in the same condition as when you moved in, except for fair wear and tear. Take dated photos as evidence.

Bills and contracts

If you pay your utility bills yourself, contact the utility companies and ensure the bills are paid in full. Also let them know the date you will be leaving the property and provide them with a final meter reading on the day you leave. If you have smart meter, take a photo of the reading.
If bills are included in your rent, give the final meter reading to your landlord but keep details for your records.

TV Licence

If you have purchased a TV licence you can get a refund for the summer months if you are not living in the property. Visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk or call 0300 790611.

Unwanted items

Remove all of your unwanted items from the property. Don’t forget to recycle or donate.

Rubbish

Completely clear the property of waste, including items of food as you may be charged for cleaners to remove it and it could stop you from getting your full deposit back.

Return keys

Follow your tenancy agreement on how to return the keys to the accommodation provider and ask for a receipt as proof.

Mail

Use Royal Mail’s post redirection service to make sure that confidential post is forwarded to another address of your choice.

 

Getting your deposit back

 

At the end of your tenancy your accommodation provider will inform the scheme that is protecting your tenancy deposit that the tenancy has come to an end and how much deposit they think should be returned to you. You will then have a choice whether to accept this or to dispute it through the deposit scheme.

Leave Liverpool Tidy 

Leave Liverpool Tidy is a reduce, reuse, recycle student led volunteering project which aims to limit the amount of reusable items going to landfill during the summer months when students move out of their accommodation. Liverpool City Council 

As a resident of Liverpool, you can request free bulky item collection from Liverpool City Council. You can request up to five bulky items per individual property, up to five small electrical items and up to five bags of textiles - clothes, belts, shoes, handbags - per collection. Book a collection.

Recycling 

Visit our recycling and waste page for further information, including how to find your local recycling centre.

If you don’t choose to recycle your unwanted items then you must take them with you. The last thing you want is to incur charges from a landlord to remove/dispose of any personal effects that you leave behind.
